The Baptistery
The Baptistery is located in the south-west corner of the church. Its position just inside the door and its enclosure within the parclose screens emphasise the significance of the Sacrament of Holy Baptism as effecting entry into the membership of the Church. At the foot of the octagonal font, carved from alabaster, are four demons being crushed by the pedestal symbolising the destruction of sin. The canopy was inspired by the medieval examples which Pugin had seen in several East Anglian churches. The glass of the baptistery window was manufactured to Pugin's designs by William Wailes of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. The centre panel shows St. John the Baptist with the holy spirit above, and holding in his hands a roundel with the symbol of Christ as the Lamb of God. In the side lights are eight personified attributes of the baptised Christian, namely: Liberality, Humility, Truth, Mercy, Modesty, Temperance, Patience and Purity. The west window of the Baptistery has patterned quatrefoils, and a shield emblazoned with the Talbot lion. Return to the St Giles' Tour
